WEEE – using Distributor Take Back Scheme

What is WEEE?
The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires EU countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items to minimise the disposal of WEEE in landfill. In the UK, producers have to register with the Environment Agency, here at Character Options we have offset this obligation by registering with our environmental partner Comply Direct. Our WEEE producer registration number is WEE/HJ0045SY.

Why recycle?
Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK’s fastest growing waste stream. Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and also human health.

Distributors (including retailers) must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. We are part of the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS) and keep a record of the information we provide to our customers on how and where to take electrical and electronic waste. As a member of the DTS, we are exempt from take-back. However, to find your local recycling points please go to http://www.recycle-more.co.uk/

To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with a crossed‐out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol) in your bin.

Batteries

The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Directive promotes the collection and recycling of waste batteries and accumulators placed on the UK market. The Directive encourages the improved environmental performance of all parties involved in the life cycle of batteries, particularly end-users. End-users are encouraged to recycled waste batteries in order to prevent them from being discarded in such a way as to cause environmental harm.

As a distributor of more than 32kg of portable batteries annually, Character Options offer the free collection of your waste or used batteries (batteries accepted must be able to be carried by an average person). As an online retailer, our battery collection point is located at Character Options Ltd, Lees Brook Mill, Lees Road, Lees, Oldham Lancashire OL4 5JL The recycling and recovery of all collected batteries is arranged through Comply Direct.

Our Batteries producer registration number is BPRN00381 and NPWD code is NPWD231436.
